Avoiding ‘The Porkchop’ — As Well As Other Things You Could Not Have Thought Of

  1. The Curve: do not spend your time worrying about the SAT Curve. For lots more details,”> check out this post.
  2. QAS: When you join the SAT, order the Question-and-Answer Service (aka QAS) if you intend on using the SAT again. It is an extra $18, but well worth it you took because you get back the test booklet of the test. The QAS is included if you have a fee waiver. The QAS comes within the mail (not online together with your ratings) about 6-8 weeks if you plan on taking tests that are close together after you take the SAT — so it’s not a great tool. If you miss it throughout the sign up, you can always purchase it later on. The QAS is just available for the SATs given into the months of January, May, and October.
  3. SAS (never to be confused because of the QAS) could be the ‘Student and Answer Service’ that can be found for non-QAS months. The expense is $13.50, and you also can order it at the time of SAT registration, or after the fact. The SAS is a easy report that demonstrates to you which answers you got right and incorrect. Helpful, not essential.
  4. When to begin test prep: Allow for 2-3 academic semesters (i.e. approximately one year…or that is full) to prepare for the SAT. That will simply take the stress off, and enable you to learn the material in a deeper, more manner that is gentle. I do realize that many people will balk at the moment frame — but seriously, it takes if you want to do well, that’s what. Plus, the type of ‘test prep’ I’m referring to is actually learning product that will serve you well in school too. But, we will say that i’ve worked with students you have got enhanced dramatically in a matter of weeks if they had been diligent studiers and stuck to a methodical plan.
  5. Tutoring: The tutor that is right assist you become more efficient, but, a) make sure you have ‘the right’ tutor (more on that later), and b) hiring a tutor isn’t the sole way to excel regarding the SAT.
  6. Get yourself ready for the SAT on a shoestring spending plan: purchase a College Board Blue Book (includes 4 SATs). Just Take a full, timed, SAT one morning each weekend (enable about 4-5 hours, while making the experience as close as possible to genuine). Then, invest the following week (or two) fixing the test that you got wrong — including all of the vocabulary you didn’t know, even if you got that question right until you have a deep understanding of each and every problem. Although the new SAT doesn’t specifically test vocabulary, understanding terms in context is critical for answering the reading passage concerns. There are always a gillion renditions of Blue Book explanations online — from the Khan Academy to College Confidential. Also, you need to use your English and Math teachers as resources.
  7. Know your test taking liberties: Read pages 1-11 of this ETS test time manual before using the SAT. Here is my ‘broken rule’ experience, which, incidentally, was mirrored in my own score that month.
  8. You are entitled to a room that is quiet the SAT, so be prepared to say something if the noise is bothering you. We found hallway sound to be distracting in the event that doors had been open, nonetheless it took me personally until SAT number 7 to realize I could let the proctor know before the test that I’d prefer the closed doorways; she was extremely mindful of my request.
  9. Sit in the front side row if possible, so you have less visual distractions. I only encountered ‘assigned seating’ when in 7 SATs.
  10. Keep yours time: do not depend on the proctors (also for you) though they are supposed to keep the time. Get an analog watch and set it back again to 12:00 before each section which means you don’t need to do any more psychological calculations than necessary. Check this out post for more details.
  11. A proper desk is important: steer clear of the ‘deskette’ experience (aka ‘the pork chop’). Having the desk that is proper for a test booklet (8 x 11), response sheet (8 x 11), pencils, and a calculator is important. Pose a question to your friends or call the SAT test coordinator for the test location to ask. We’d even go so far as to express that I think it’s worth driving a bit further to have you to ultimately a suitable desk. Pork chop desk shuffling adds unneeded time and discombobulation to an experience that is already stressful.
